Embracing the concept of "landscape as a function of time," Benning shot his film at 13 different American lakes in identical 10-minute takes. James Benning's feature-length film can be seen as a series of moving landscape paintings with artistry and scope that might be compared to Claude Monet's series of water-lily paintings. The story is often viewed as a commentary on McCarthyism, Fascism, or Communism.Įxpanded essay by Joanna E. Filmed in a spare, claustrophobic style-largely set in one jury room-the play relates a single juror's refusal to conform to peer pressure in a murder trial and follows his conversion of one juror after another to his point of view. Reginald Rose had adapted his original stage play "12 Angry Men" for Studio One in 1954, and Henry Fonda decided to produce a screen version, taking the lead role and hiring director Sidney Lumet, who had been directing for television since 1950. In the 1950s, several television dramas acted live over the airways won such critical acclaim that they were also produced as motion pictures among those already honored by the National Film Registry is "Marty" (1955). Frankie Laine sang the film's popular theme song, also titled "3:10 to Yuma." Often compared favorably with "High Noon," this innovative western from director Delmer Daves starred Glenn Ford and Van Heflin in roles cast against type and was based on a short story by Elmore Leonard. Harryhausen's stunning Dynamation process, which blended stop-motion animation and live-actions sequences, and a thrilling score by Bernard Herrmann ("Psycho," "The Day the Earth Stood Still") makes this one of the finest fantasy films of all time.Įxpanded essay by Tony Dalton (PDF, 900KB) 3:10 to Yuma (1957)Ĭonsidered to be one of the best westerns of the 1950s, "3:10 to Yuma" has gained in stature since its original release as audiences have recognized the progressive insight the film provides into the psychology of its two main characters that becomes vividly exposed during scenes of heightened tension. And of course no mythological tale would be complete without the rescue of a damsel in distress, here a princess (Kathryn Grant) that the evil magician shrinks down to a mere few inches. Special-effects master Ray Harryhausen provides the hero (Kerwin Mathews) with a villanous magician (Torin Thatcher) and fantastic antagonists, including a genie, giant cyclops, fire-breathing dragons, and a sword-wielding animated skeleton, all in glorious Technicolor. "Seventh Heaven" also marked the first time often-paired stars Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell worked together.Įxpanded essay by Aubrey Solomon (PDF, 694KB) The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) Janet Gaynor, Frank Borzage, and Benjamin Glazer won Oscars for their work on the film, specifically awards for Best Actress, Best Directing (Dramatic Picture), and Best Writing (Adaptation), respectively. The popularity of the film resulted in it becoming one of the most commercially successful silent films as well as one of the first films to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award. "Seventh Heaven" was initially released as a silent film but proved so popular with audiences that it was re-released with a synchronized soundtrack later that same year. "Seventh Heaven" (also referred to as "7th Heaven"), directed by Frank Borzage and based on the play by Austin Strong, tells the story of Chico (Charles Farrell), the Parisian sewer worker-turned-street cleaner, and his wife Diane (Janet Gaynor), who are separated during World War I, yet whose love manages to keep them connected. On the front of a house owned by Michael Camacho and Mallory Jones hangs a single strand of Christmas lights and blue-and-white posters emblazoned with the image of a cowboy-hatted man holding a large brick. Michael Camacho and Mallory Jones with their sons, Gabriel and Lionel, at their home in Marfa in August. Yet despite those obstacles, some folks who really want to live here have turned to adobe’s old tradition and the earth beneath their feet to do something not so simple at all: commit to a place, make a life, create a home. These days, those opportunities seem harder to find, since even the cheapest adobe homes are desirable and valuable. Marfa was that place where, with a little luck, some guidance, and a permit in hand, a lot of us who were cash-strapped but plucky built lives while rebuilding our houses. Sometimes, as the dust floated between us and the thermometer’s mercury rose, we intoned the words of the architect: “It’s adobe. It was dusty work, removing bricks from one place, hefting them into our Toyota, which groaned under the weight, carefully placing them so they didn’t crumble, moving them into the house and fitting and packing them into the wall until the great gap filled, hearing the constant scrape of shovels while mixing mortar, trundling wheelbarrows of dirt, old lath, and plaster to piles by the street, loading the poor truck again for trips to the landfill, and then replastering the wall inside and out and pouring a concrete buttress along the exterior. These bricks were almost too heavy to carry, and large, twelve by eighteen inches, which matched those in our house. Too broke to buy adobe bricks from Mexico, where, then and now, a few commercial adobemakers exist, we instead cadged bricks from a friend’s derelict building in Valentine, a half-hour drive northwest. You can fix anything that’s adobe.” An adobe crew sifts dirt for a project in 2017. An architect who’d restored an adobe building in Fort Davis stopped by one day. We despaired, thinking we’d made a terrible mistake. Daylight streamed through a gash, about 1 foot wide by 22 feet long, that ran along the base of a load-bearing wall, which was itself held upright by spiderwebs and magic. And as with many local adobe buildings, the capillary action of the bricks’ earth and straw had drawn moisture from the ground, to deleterious and melty effect. As in many local adobe buildings, its walls met the ground without the structural intervention of a foundation. Taking something that was disregarded and broken and making it beautiful felt important, even if it took a very long time to fix, which it did. Our beloved house cost $9,500 back in 1996-to us, all the money in the world. Perhaps half the planet’s population lives in earthen houses. But as ancient as it is, adobe remains contemporary. Native Americans had used earthen bricks for centuries by the time the Spanish arrived. Some of the world’s oldest cities, going back to 9500 BC, were made of mud bricks. Adobe buildings have thick walls for structural integrity, and the earthen bricks absorb heat, keeping the interior cool. It appears in arid places where dirt is the cheapest and most abundant natural resource. It was, of course, ours.Īdobe is the humblest of building materials, for which earth, straw, and water are formed into bricks and then dried in the sun. “That’s the one house in Marfa that’s dilapidated and occupied,” he told me. The city administrator slid up to me, pointing at a dot on the map. It also showed which structures were occupied. I once stood looking at a city hall map that color coded the condition of every home in town-Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor, Dilapidated. Surprisingly, not everyone was so charmed. Yet despite its absence of plumbing or solid flooring, its wide dogtrot hallway and tall windows felt friendly and right, as though it had been waiting for us. Looking back, it was a falling down, spooky ruin whose chief inhabitants for untold decades were snake skins and mummified cats. This was our yard 26 years ago, when my husband, Michael, and I used our savings for grad school to buy a one-hundred-year-old house in Marfa. Then there is the house, or shed, or studio itself, rising nakedly half-finished amid a landscape bristling with shovels and ladders. Those who work with adobe are natural scroungers and re-users: a heap of leftover mud bricks from someone’s demolition over here, a pile of wooden forms stacked there, sheet metal sourced from the dump, waiting to cover sacks of plaster. The house of an adobero is identifiable by the quantity and type of stuff in the yard. However, this is not always the best way for representational painting, since one result is for colors to also shift in their hues. It is common among some artistic painters to darken a paint color by adding black paint-producing colors called shades-or to lighten a color by adding white-producing colors called tints. Lights are made brighter or dimmer by adjusting their brightness, i.e., energy level in painting, lightness is adjusted through mixture with white, black, or a color's complement. This moves the mixed color toward a neutral color-a gray or near-black. When we mix colorants, such as the pigments in paint mixtures, a color is produced which is always darker and lower in chroma, or saturation, than the parent colors. When mixing colored light (additive color models), the achromatic mixture of spectrally balanced red, green, and blue (RGB) is always white, not gray or black. Meanwhile, the term tint can be generalized to refer to any lighter or darker variation of a color (e.g. In common language, the term shade can be generalized to encompass any varieties of a particular color, whether technically they are shades, tints, tones, or slightly different hues. In the graphic arts, especially printmaking and drawing, "tone" has a different meaning, referring to areas of continuous color, produced by various means, as opposed to the linear marks made by an engraved or drawn line. Mixing a color with any neutral color (including black, gray, and white) reduces the chroma, or colorfulness, while the hue (the relative mixture of red, green, blue, etc., depending on the colorspace) remains unchanged. A tone is produced either by mixing a color with gray, or by both tinting and shading. Both processes affect the resulting color mixture's relative saturation. In another studycomparing green and oolong teas, oolong was shown to have significantly higher energy expenditure levels than the green variety. The study was conducted without any changes in food or exercise levels. The study was conducted on 12 male subjects over a period of three days who were given nothing to drink but one of four beverages: full-strength oolong tea, caffeinated water with caffeine equal to full strength oolong tea, half-strength oolong tea, and non-caffeinated water. These were the findings of a 2001 study conducted by the US Agriculture Research Services Diet and Human Laboratory. This was without any changes in food or exercise levels. However, with the addition of these polyphenols, fat burning was shown to increase a whopping 12% in participants who were given oolong to drink.Īdditionally, the test subjects burned an extra 67 calories per day. One study in particular found that there are some polymerized polyphenols found in oolong that aren’t present in the other varieties, that can help you shed excess weight.Ĭaffeine on its own has been shown to increase the body’s natural energy expenditure. This claim is now just starting to have some scientific backing, and studies related to the effects of tea have led to some interesting findings. In fact, if you order a hot tea at your favorite Chinese restaurant, an oolong is what you typically receive.Īctually, in China and other Asian countries it has long been held as fact that this is a beverage that will help you lose weight. Oolong for Weight LossĬhina and Taiwan are the two main producers of this tea variety. Chinese varieties are fermented for shorter periods and thus are lighter in color and flavor than Taiwanese brews. Oolongs are fermented anywhere from 12-70%, placing them between a green and a black on that scale.Ī Chinese type will probably be closer in taste to a green tea, whereas an example of this type from Taiwan will have more in common with a black tea. White teas aren’t fermented at all, greens very minimally, and blacks are fermented the longest. You may be wondering then, what makes an oolong an oolong?Īs I’ve discussed previously, the period of fermentation is what divides the different brews into their respective categories. If you are new to tea, oolong may be a better option to try first, as most types of this tea are much mellower on the tongue than black and not as biting as green can be. Having given you a plethora of black tea options to explore, I’m moving on today to the world of oolong. And Lionhead squeezes as much value out of the conceit as possible - grading you for every class, and letting you repeat them to achieve higher marks. But it helps the fiction, making sense of your level one competence as an adult. It's a decision that makes for a long intro. Much of the early game takes place in makeshift arenas and on shooting ranges where you hit straw dummies with arrows and bolts of lightning. The stage is set for Fable to reclaim the emote with its trademark theatrical flourish.Ĭontemporary AAA games have made an art of teaching you mechanics as smoothly as possible, integrating tutorials into story scenes so subtle that you might not even realise you're learning.įable does the opposite, explicitly taking you through childhood and the multi-stage training process that turns you from tragic orphan to revenge-fuelled warrior. Animal Crossing: New Horizons (opens in new tab) has mastered the emote as a collectible, rewarding extended play with an expanded set of animations. Watch Dogs 2 (opens in new tab)'s emote wheel allows you to taunt NPCs, starting fights that prompt other nearby NPCs to call the police, triggering a cascade of unpredictable AI behaviour. In recent years, other series have pushed the expression game forward. They even feed into your moral alignment, confirming once and for all that farting is inherently evil. Where most of Fable's peers limited you to either talking or killing NPCs, expressions let you interact with characters in a systemic and, dare I say it, nuanced fashion. The belches and giggles are silly, yes – but expressions are also a significant expansion of your protagonist's verb set. They tended not to have any mechanical impact, existing only in the communicative layer where players created their own meaning.įable’s innovation was to make the emote a primary part of a single-player game. In addition, all new features of the more recent Xbox consoles work, including the ability to take screen grabs and record and share video of gameplay. Before Fable, emotes were the preserve of multiplayer games – a way to express thanks and frustration in shooters, and to '/dance' the night away in MMOs. If there are any weird undertones in the color, they will be amplified when contrasted onto plain white paper. “Once I have narrowed down a color I am considering, I take that color chip, cut it out, and lay it on a piece of white typing paper. “Undertones can be really tricky when selecting grays,” offers Armstrong. They told us both what they loved and how they used each shade (whether it was application, placement, or finish) plus the different ways that light-ambient or natural-can impact how warm these hues actually come off. Naturally, it’s easy to dismiss gray as a cool color even when you narrow down your swatches to those with beige, violet, or yellow undertones, a trip to the hardware store can still reveal aisle after aisle of options. Of course, this versatile choice can shift depending on the time of day or the direction of the sun, so if you’re determined to keep the vibes inside comfy and cozy rather than stark and sterile, designers suggest sticking with a warm gray (and perhaps finishing the look with brass hardware and a cashmere throw blanket). If you’re torn between going bold with a darker paint color like an inky black or playing it safe with a simple white, there’s fun middle ground to be found with gray.
